COMPARISON OF THE EFFICACY AND TOLERANCE BETWEEN MICONAZOLE AS CHEWING GUM AND AS GEL APPLICATION IN PATIENTS WITH ORAL CANDIDIASIS

Abstract

Introduction: Oral Candidiasis is one of the most common human opportunistic infection of the oral cavity. These lesions are caused by the yeast Candida albicans. There are many types of Candida species, which are seen in the oral cavity. Species of oral Candida are: C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. guillermondii, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, C. pseudotropicalis, C. stellatoidea, C. tropicalis. In this study we compare of the efficacy and tolerance between miconazole as chewing gum and as gel application in patients with oral candidiasis. Aim: This study aim to compare and evaluate the efficacy, biocompatibility, tolerance of Miconazole chewing gum with Miconazole gel in management of Oral Candidiasis. 17 Method and Materials: The study group consisted of 24 patients with oral candidiasis, evaluated clinically and histologically. Group A patients (12) chewed one piece of chewing gum (dose: 3.6 mg of miconazole) three times daily, Group B was given a 2% gel (dose: 20 mg of miconazole) to apply in the affected area three times daily. Both group were evaluated at baseline visit, during active phase (7th, 14th, 21st, 28th day), and follow up phase (for 3 months). Result: There is significant difference was evident for burning sensation scale before treatment and after treatment with chewing gum and gel with p<0.001 and p<0.05 respectively. Significant difference was also evident for patch/plaque and scrapable availability before treatment and after treatment with chewing gum and gel with p<0.001 at the end of the follow up of the treatment. Conclusion: The miconazole chewing gum was founfd to be equally effective as miconazole gel.
